Over the years, the firm has developed extensive competence in the Nigerian petroleum industry’s entire value chain. We deal with a wide range of legal work for both established and start-up businesses in the sector, in addition to playing an important role in the settlement of disputes arising from these activities.
We are engaged in legal advisory work, covering various aspects of the industry on a continuous basis on behalf of Nigeria’s national oil company, major operators in the upstream sector, regulatory bodies in the upstream and downstream sectors, independent and indigenous oil companies, as well as major companies in Nigeria’s gas sector.
The firm has advised on bids, acquisitions, relinquishments, divestments, assignments and renewals of acreage rights, among others. We have also reviewed petroleum development contracts used in Nigeria as well as the fiscal regime of specific investments in this sector.
Our Energy and Extractive Group completed a 152 page extensive study on behalf of the House of Representatives (Joint Committees on Upstream, Downstream, Gas and Justice) with regard to legal and policy aspects of the Petroleum Industry Bill. This study saw the firm consulting with key stakeholders in the petroleum industry and reviewing the memoranda they presented to the National Assembly on the Petroleum Industry Bill. It also involved examining existing relevant Nigerian laws, relevant customary International laws, bilateral investment treaties concluded between Nigeria and other countries, international best practices in the industry, legal regimes of other oil producing jurisdictions, as well as local and International case law in these areas.
We have also undertaken an in-depth review of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act on behalf of the House of Representatives Sub-Committee on Nigerian Content and advised the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) on the legal framework for the Nigerian Content Fund.
The activities of this group are being supervised by two of our partners - One, with specialized professional and academic training and hands-on experience in the Oil and Gas terrain and another, who served as General -Counsel of one of the IOCs operating in Nigeria.
